FAQs about Bedding

What makes a 100% cotton duvet cover different?

Cotton breathes. It draws moisture away from the skin during the night, regulates temperature better than polyester, and softens with every wash rather than pilling. A 100% cotton duvet cover is the fabric your skin presses against for eight hours a night, which makes the composition matter more than it would in a curtain. Polyester covers can look identical in a product photograph. They feel different by morning three.

What is the difference between percale and sateen cotton duvet covers?

Percale is a plain weave: one thread over, one thread under, giving the fabric a crisp, matte finish. It feels cool and breathable, the choice for warm sleepers and warmer climates. Sateen is woven with more threads on the surface, which creates a subtle sheen and a silkier feel. It holds warmth slightly better than percale, making it the closer choice to that hotel-bed feeling most people are trying to recreate at home. Both are 100% cotton. The difference is entirely in the weave.

Is organic cotton worth it for a duvet cover?

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides and certified by third-party standards such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard). For a duvet cover, whether it is worth the premium depends on why you are asking. If you have sensitive skin or want to reduce chemical exposure in the supply chain, organic cotton is a meaningful distinction. If your primary concern is feel and durability, a high-quality conventional 100% cotton cover performs comparably. The fibre quality and the weave matter more than the organic label alone.

How do I care for a 100% cotton duvet cover?

Wash at 30-40 degrees C with a mild detergent. No bleach, which weakens the cotton fibres over time. No fabric softener, which coats the weave and reduces breathability. Tumble dry on a low setting or line dry. Percale benefits from a warm iron if you want the crisp finish; sateen needs less. Cotton duvet covers soften with each wash rather than thinning, so the feel in the first year is not the final feel.

What size cotton duvet cover do I need?

Match the size of your duvet cover to your duvet insert, not just your mattress. In Europe, Japan and Brazil, a 140 or 160 cm bed takes a 240×220 cm cover; a 180 cm bed takes 260×240 cm; a 200 cm bed takes 280×240 cm. In the UK, Double and King both use a 230×230 cm cover, Superking takes 270×230 cm, and Emperor takes 280×240 cm. In the US, Australia and Canada, Queen takes 230×230 cm and King takes 270×230 cm.

If you prefer generous drape on the sides, choose the duvet insert one size above your mattress width rather than sizing up the cover to compensate. A cover matched to the insert sits correctly and fills out to the corners — one that is too large for the insert bunches and shifts through the night.

Do cotton duvet covers shrink in the wash?

Woven cotton can shrink slightly in the first two or three washes, particularly above 40 degrees C. Ours are pre-washed during production to minimise this. Washing at 30-40 degrees C on the first wash keeps any shrinkage negligible. The fibres stabilise after the first few washes and hold their size consistently from that point.

Cotton Duvet Covers, Woven in Portugal

A cotton duvet cover is the fabric your skin presses against all night. The material decision matters.

Polyester covers cost less to produce and photograph identically to cotton ones. They feel different by the third morning. Cotton breathes, regulates temperature, and softens with each wash rather than pilling or holding static. For a cover you are inside for eight hours, that difference is not cosmetic.

Ours are 100% cotton, woven in Portugal in the same mill we have been running since 1967. Percale for the crisp, cool finish. Sateen for the silkier drape and the closer feel to a hotel bed. Each cover is made without synthetic blends.
