FAQs about Bedding

What size are hand towels?

Standard hand towels measure 50x100 cm, sized to hang on a ring or rail and dry hands without trailing on the floor. That is the size that fits most bathroom fixtures, towel rails, and linen shelves without adjustment. Ours are cut consistently to that dimension, so if you are building a set, the pieces hang and stack evenly. The size matters more than it seems. A hand towel that is too small misses the job; one that is too large belongs in a different pile.

What is the difference between terry and waffle hand towels?

Terry is woven with looped cotton pile on both sides. The loops trap moisture quickly, giving the towel its soft, plush surface and the absorbency most people expect from a bathroom towel. It is the classic choice: thick, comfortable, and reliable in the wash. Waffle is woven in a honeycomb grid, which makes it lighter and faster to dry. Waffle hand towels drape flatter on a rail, hold their shape better in humid rooms, and are ready again sooner. Pick terry for the plush, familiar feel. Pick waffle if drying time matters to you.

How do I choose the right hand towel for my bathroom?

Three things, in order: material, weight, and colour. The material decides how the towel feels and how fast it dries between uses. The weight, measured in grams per square metre (GSM), tells you how substantial it will feel in the hand: 400-500 GSM covers everyday practical use, 550 GSM and above is where the cotton becomes noticeably softer and more absorbent. Colour is a room decision, not a fabric decision. Settle on material and weight first, then choose the colour that suits the space.

How do I care for cotton hand towels?

Wash at 30-40 degrees C with a mild detergent. Skip fabric softener: it coats the cotton fibres and reduces absorbency over time, which defeats the purpose of a towel. Tumble dry on a low setting, or line dry and shake the towel out before hanging to keep the pile open. Cotton hand towels soften with each wash rather than thinning. The feel in a well-used set often surpasses a new one straight from the packet.

How many hand towels do I need per bathroom?

Two per person using the bathroom is the working number. One in use, one clean and ready. For a shared household or a bathroom that sees regular guests, four to six is more practical. Hand towels cycle faster than bath towels because more people reach for them more often. A small surplus means you are not handing a guest something that has been on the rail since Tuesday.

Are hand towels the same size in the US, UK, and Europe?

Mostly. The standard hand towel across North America and continental Europe is 50x100 cm, roughly 16x30 inches. Some brands run 40x76 cm or list 16x30 inches exactly, which is close enough that it makes no practical difference. UK and Australian sizing can vary, and what one market labels a hand towel another may call a guest towel. If you are buying across brands or markets to build a matched set, check the listed dimensions. The label alone does not guarantee the same size.

Cotton Hand Towels, Woven in Portugal

A hand towel is the most-used piece of fabric in your bathroom. Worth getting right.

It hangs by the sink. People reach for it throughout the day. It dries hands quickly, or it does not. It softens with washing, or it does not. A hand towel that works well disappears into the daily routine; one that does not becomes the thing you replace twice a year.

Ours are woven in Portugal, in the same mill we have been running since 1967. Terry for the plush, absorbent everyday feel. Waffle for the lighter, faster-drying option. Each cotton hand towel is cut to 40x75 cm: the size that hangs properly on a ring or rail without adjusting.

The cotton softens with every wash rather than thinning. That is what happens when the fibre and the weave are right. It takes a few washes to settle in, and then it stays.

Shop by colour: white hand towels for a clean, pared-back bathroom. Striped hand towels if you want a quiet pattern in the room. Build the set your way.

Looking for a different size in the same cotton? Bath sheets for full-body coverage after a shower. Guest towels for smaller, decorative pieces by the sink. Face towels for the bathroom shelf.

Other hand towels for bathrooms are sewn to look right in a photograph. Ours are sewn to feel right after a hundred washes. Made in Portugal, since 1967.
