The towel that gets better after twenty washes
Most towels are at their best the day you unwrap them. Ours are not — they soften and open up over the first month, then stay that way for years. That is not marketing; it is what long-staple organic cotton does when it is woven properly, in a mill that has been doing it since 1967.
Why cheap towels go stiff
A towel fails in one of two ways. Either it was made with short cotton fibres that break and shed, so it thins and roughens; or it was finished with silicone softeners that feel wonderful in the shop and then wash out, leaving something that repels water instead of absorbing it. Both are invisible at the moment of buying. That is the honest reason it is so hard to judge a towel online.
We use long-staple organic cotton spun into long terry loops, and we finish with nothing. No softener, no coating. The first wash is when our towel starts working properly — and it keeps improving while the alternative degrades.
550 GSM, on purpose
Heavyweight hotel towels feel impressive and then sit damp on the rail until evening. Midweight 550 GSM absorbs just as well and dries between showers — which is why it is what we use at home, and why there is no damp-towel smell in the bathroom.
Woven stripes, not printed
The colour is dyed into the yarn and woven into the terry, so the stripe cannot crack, fade at the edges or wash off. Look closely and the stripe is the same on both faces — the tell of a woven cloth rather than a surface print.
Finished by hand in Portugal
Double-stitched hems and a flat woven border that stops the edge curling after washing. Spun, dyed, woven and hemmed inside one mill in Portugal — ours, not a supplier we found last year.

Marshmellow is the direct-to-you brand of Lintexport, a Portuguese textile manufacturer founded in 1967. For decades we wove for other people’s labels — including hotels you would recognise. The same looms, the same technicians, the same quality control now make towels that come to you without the three markups in between. That is the entire reason a towel of this standard costs €37 and not €90.
Questions worth asking
How do I know it will not go stiff like the last ones?
Because there is nothing on it to wash out. Many towels are finished with silicone softeners that feel plush in store and rinse away within a month, leaving fibres that repel water. Ours are finished bare, so what you feel in week one is what you feel in year five — softer, if anything. Wash it once before you decide; if you disagree, send it back within 30 days.
Midweight or heavyweight — which should I buy?
Midweight 550 GSM for daily use: it absorbs as much water and dries far faster, which matters in a family bathroom or a flat without much ventilation. Heavyweight 700 GSM is the spa-morning towel — denser, more enveloping, slower to dry. If this is the towel you use every day, midweight is the right answer, and it is what most of our own team have at home.
Which set should I choose?
For two people starting fresh, the 2+2 covers the daily routine — a bath towel and a hand towel each. The six-piece adds face towels for the basin, which is the set most households settle on. The eight-piece adds bath sheets for anyone who prefers to wrap rather than dry, and is the one to send as a wedding or housewarming gift.
What does Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 actually mean?
Every component — yarn, dye, thread, label — has been laboratory-tested against a list of substances harmful to human health, and passed. It is a test result on the finished product, not a general claim about intentions. We name it specifically because vague “eco” badges have made the word sustainable close to meaningless.
Will the colours fade?
The stripes are yarn-dyed — the cotton is dyed before it is woven, so the colour goes through the fibre rather than sitting on the surface. Wash at 40°, avoid bleach, and they hold. Printed stripes on cheaper towels crack and lift because the colour was only ever on top.
How do I wash them?
Machine wash at 40°, tumble dry low or line dry. Skip the fabric softener entirely — it coats the loops and is the single most common reason a good towel stops absorbing. The first wash before use sets the loops and removes any weaving dust; after that they simply get better.
Is this a good gift?
It is the gift people keep using, which is rarer than it sounds. A six-piece set at €124 covers a housewarming properly; the eight-piece at €238 is a wedding present. Everything ships in Marshmellow packaging, and exchanges are simple if a colour is not right.
