Our mill, Portugal
Warm without weight
Flannel is cotton brushed on both faces to raise a fine nap that traps a thin layer of air. That is what makes the bed feel warm the moment you get in, rather than after ten minutes.
It should not pill
Cheap flannel is brushed hard on short fibres, which is why it goes bobbly by February. Ours is brushed gently on long-staple cotton — the nap stays, the surface does not.
Woven in our own mill
Spun, brushed, dyed and sewn in Portugal since 1967. Deep fitted corners that still fit a mattress topper, and buttons rather than a zip on the duvet cover.
Why the sizes never line up
A duvet cover is sized by the duvet, a fitted sheet by the mattress and a flat sheet by the drop — three different systems for one bed. It is the single most common reason bedding gets returned.
So we stopped asking. Tell us your bed and every piece above is already the right size, in the sizing your country actually uses.
Build your bedQuestions worth asking
Can I mix colours across the pieces?
Yes. Pick a colour at the top to set everything, then use the small dots beside each line to change that piece on its own. A Grey duvet cover with Mustard pillowcases, or a Blue flat sheet folded over a Grey cover — the bed updates as you go and everything still arrives in one order.
Why can I not see the fitted sheet on the bed?
Because you would not see it on a made bed either — it is under everything. Its colour still matters when you strip the bed or fold the duvet back, so pick it in the list and check the photograph; the bed drawing only shows what is actually visible.
How do I know which bed size to choose?
Measure your mattress, not the room. If you are between sizes, take the larger: a duvet cover that is slightly generous still looks right, a tight one never does.
I already have a duvet cover. Can I buy just the sheets?
Yes — that is the sheet set: fitted sheet, flat sheet and two pillowcases, no duvet cover. It is the right choice if you are replacing worn sheets, or if you already own a cover you like and simply want the flannel underneath.
Will flannel make me too hot?
Flannel is warm, not hot — it is still cotton, so it breathes. The brushed nap traps air rather than sealing it in, which is why it feels warm on contact but does not leave you damp at 3am the way a synthetic does. It is bedding for October to April; we keep percale for the summer.
Does it pill?
Good flannel should not. Pilling comes from brushing short fibres too aggressively to fake softness cheaply. Ours is brushed gently on long-staple cotton, so the nap holds. Wash at 40° without softener and it gets softer rather than bobbly.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash at 40°, no fabric softener — it coats the nap and flattens it. Tumble low or line dry. Flannel comes out of the wash needing no ironing, which is most of its charm.
